Penelec Launches New Energy-Saving Program for Customers with Central Air Conditioners
Easy Cool Rewards Participants Save Money on Electricity Bills; Help Ease Peak Electricity Demand
READING, Pa., July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]) has launched Easy Cool Rewards, a new program to help customers with central air conditioning reduce their electricity costs. Easy Cool Rewards is another of the utility's residential energy efficiency programs designed to help customers save energy and money.
Residential customers who participate in this voluntary program receive $60 and a Honeywell programmable thermostat professionally installed in their home. The thermostat, which is a $250 value, can help customers reduce their home heating and cooling costs by up to 15 percent.
High electricity demand results in a costly strain on the electricity distribution system. The Easy Cool Rewards program will reduce electricity demand during the summer months by cycling participants' central air conditioner compressors off and on periodically. Though this cycling provides significant energy-saving benefits to the region, participation results in little impact on the temperature of individual homes.
To be eligible for the program, you must be a Penelec customer with central air conditioning. Participants have access to a 24-hour toll-free customer service hotline. Those who don't want a programmable thermostat installed can choose to have an outside switch attached to their air conditioner compressor, instead.
