The First Bancshares, Inc. Reports Increased Earnings for the Nine Months Ended September 30, 2010

HATTIESBURG, Miss.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--The First Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ: FBMS), holding company for The First, A National Banking Association, ([ www.thefirstbank.com ]) today reported earnings for the quarter ended September 30, 2010. Net income available to common stockholders for the three months ended September 30, 2010 amounted to $547,000, or $.18 per diluted share, compared to $572,000, or $.19 per diluted share for the three months ended June 30, 2010. Net income available to common stockholders for the nine months ended September 30, 2010 amounted to $1,579,000 or $.52 per diluted share, compared to $937,000, or $.31 per diluted share for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, an increase of $642,000 or $.21 per diluted share.

The following are key highlights for the quarter ended September 30, 2010:

  • Net interest margin increased to 3.52% from 3.45% at June 30, 2010
  • Return on average assets increased to .43% from .42% at June 30, 2010
  • Return on average equity increased to 4.74% from 4.67% at June 30, 2010
  • Certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (aCDFIa) and participated in the Community Development Capital Initiative (aCDCIa)

Net Interest Income and Non-Interest Income

Net interest income for the quarter ended September 30, 2010, was $4.2 million, a $615,000 increase compared to the third quarter of 2009. This increase was a result of increased loan volume as well as continued overall improvement in the banka™s net interest margin.

Non-interest income decreased $77,000 for the third quarter of 2010 to $1,054,000 as compared to $1,131,000 for the third quarter of 2009. An increase of $186,000 in impairment losses related to our trust preferred securities attributed to this decrease.

Non-Interest Expense

Non-interest expense increased $318,000 for the third quarter of 2010 to $4,025,000 as compared to $3,707,000 for the third quarter of 2009. Increases in expenses related to Other Real Estate and FDIC assessments accounted for approximately $254,000 of this increase.

Total Assets, Net Loans and Deposits

Total assets were up $7.7 million, or 1.6%, between June 30, 2010, and September 30, 2010. Deposits saw a decrease of $7.5 million or 1.9% over the same period. Total loans, net of unearned interest, increased $4.6 million, or 1.4% between June 30, 2010, and September 30, 2010.

At September 30, 2010, The First Bancshares, Inc. reported total loans of $336.1 million, total assets of $504.7 million, total deposits of $397.7 million and stockholdersa™ equity of $57.2 million. Return on average assets was .43% and return on average equity was 4.74% for the quarter.
