OMAHA, Neb.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--An annual [ survey ] released by TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation (NASDAQ: AMTD) found that the top New Yeara™s resolutions for 2011 reflect a focus on quality of life. While asave more moneya (65 percent) was included among the top three resolutions, arelax/reduce stressa (67 percent) and ahave more funa (67 percent) were the most popular responses.

"When the recession was at its peak in 2008 and 2009, fear and uncertainty drove a lot of people to act on their financial plans"

Just two years ago the same survey found the opposite to be true, as asave more moneya was the top resolution, followed by aspend more time with familya and arelax/reduce stress,a respectively.

Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they are less likely to make New Year's resolutions about their personal finances this year than last year. The reason? Their health and well-being are simply more important this year, according to 50 percent of respondents. Thirty-nine percent of respondents also reported they're in better financial shape compared to previous years.

aWhen the recession was at its peak in 2008 and 2009, fear and uncertainty drove a lot of people to act on their financial plans,a said Stuart Rubinstein, managing director, investment products, TDAmeritrade. aToday, wea™re seeing a shift and while Americans are still striving to meet financial goals, they may feel confident enough in their financial standing to put relaxation and fun first in 2011.a

It also appears that Americans are ready to move beyond doom and gloom this year, as 55 percent of respondents describe their financial outlook for 2011 as uncertain, but hopeful the economy is on the rebound. This tempered, but optimistic outlook was most pronounced among women and younger Americans (58 percent among young adults ages 18-34, 60 percent of women). Only 23 percent of all respondents reported that they are pessimistic about the financial outlook.

aWhile economic optimism is certainly on the rise, we should not use that as an excuse to forget everything wea™ve learned about the importance of creating a long-term financial plan,a said Rubinstein. aMaking financial goals and taking actionable steps to achieve them is something we should all resolve to do.a
