Travelers Extends Title Sponsorship of PGA TOUR Event
HARTFORD, Conn.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: [ TRV ]) today announced it will extend the company's title sponsorship of Connecticut's PGA TOUR event, the [ Travelers Championship ], through 2014. The original title sponsorship agreement was to expire in 2010.
The multi-year agreement ensures the tournament will continue to support local charities, such as The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the Greater Hartford Jaycees and many others, while building on the success of the last two years since Travelers became title sponsor. The Travelers Championship will continue to be played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
"We are pleased to extend our partnership with the PGA TOUR and this prestigious golf event in Connecticut," said Jay Fishman, chairman and chief executive officer of Travelers. "Our sponsorship of the Travelers Championship provides the company with a tremendous opportunity to support the community and continue raising significant funds for local charities. It's been an important part of sports history in Connecticut and we're committed as ever to help make it a first-rate event for players, sponsors and the fans."
"As the Official Property Casualty Insurer of the PGA TOUR, Travelers has been an important partner for many years and we are delighted that it will continue as title sponsor of the Travelers Championship through 2014," said Tim Finchem, commissioner of the PGA TOUR. "Travelers has done an outstanding job of raising the caliber of the event on every level and we expect more innovative enhancements from Travelers for years to come."
Since the inaugural Travelers Championship in 2007, Travelers has worked closely with tournament officials to make many enhancements to the event, which has been played in Connecticut since 1952. In 2007, the tournament increased the purse to $6 million, and in 2008 unveiled a state-of-the-art practice facility, making the TPC River Highlands a key destination for many of the TOUR's top players.
The 2009 Travelers Championship, June 22 – 28, will deliver an enhanced fan experience with the opening of an expanded fan zone where spectators will have the ability to participate in interactive exhibits and have the option to stay at the course for entertainment after play concludes on certain days.
"Travelers has been an outstanding partner and we are excited about the extension of their title sponsorship," said Tournament Director Nathan Grube. "Thanks to Travelers' hands-on approach with the tournament, we've achieved success on many levels – attendance, player field, charitable donation – but we can't take it for granted. We're grateful for the continued support of all our sponsors and the entire community for making sure this historic event lives on."
The Travelers Championship will be televised both domestically and internationally. The first and second rounds will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel and the third and fourth rounds will be broadcast live on CBS.
