Umar Patek, an Indonesian militant convicted for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, has begun a deradicalization program in a Jakarta prison, as reported on April 20, 2022. Patek, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2012, is participating in the program to help him reintegrate into society upon his release in 2029. Patek's involvement in the program is seen as a test case for Indonesia's efforts to rehabilitate terrorists and reduce the risk of recidivism among convicted militants.
