  Me cofounder Linda Avey is mourning what the biotech company could have become. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday.

Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of 23andMe, has expressed that the company strayed from its original mission under the leadership of its former executives, Richard Scheller and Ken Hillan. In an interview with Forbes, Wojcicki highlighted that the focus shifted away from the company's core purpose of providing genetic insights to consumers, towards less relevant projects like drug development. This shift, according to Wojcicki, led to a disconnect with the company's foundational goals. Following the departure of Scheller and Hillan, 23andMe has undergone layoffs and is now refocusing on its direct-to-consumer genetic testing services, aiming to realign with its initial vision of empowering individuals with their genetic information.
