Britain's National Energy System Operator said the country's electricity supply margin could drop below the threshold set out in its capacity market rules by 1730 GMT on Tuesday.

The UK's electricity supply margin is expected to fall below the required threshold in 2024, according to the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO). This shortfall, projected for the winter of 2024-2025, could lead to potential power outages if not addressed. The ESO has indicated that while there is no immediate risk to supply, the situation underscores the need for additional capacity or demand management strategies. The report highlights the closure of several coal and gas power plants, alongside delays in new energy projects, as contributing factors to the tight supply margins. The ESO plans to implement measures like the Demand Flexibility Service, where consumers are incentivized to reduce electricity usage during peak times, and is also considering the use of emergency coal units to bolster supply.
