In 2011, American Electric Power decided to shut down the Kammer, Kanawha and Philip Sporn power stations, which are all located in West Virginia. It was stated that these power plants, which were built in 1950's, did not comply with a series of environmental regulations passed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
