AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]) announced today that a teacher in its Ohio Edison service area has been awarded a Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Grant.  The grant winner is Rebecca Baxter, Champion Middle School, Champion Local School District, Warren, Ohio.

"FirstEnergy is proud to provide this grant to Ms. Baxter to promote innovative science, mathematics and technology lessons that will help our students succeed in the classroom and ultimately in the workplace," said Dee Lowery, vice president of Corporate Affairs and Community Involvement and president of the FirstEnergy Foundation.  "As is the case every year, we received outstanding applications and had a difficult time choosing the winner."

FirstEnergy offers annual grants of up to $500 to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by its electric utility operating companies in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and West Virginia, and where it operates power plants or other facilities.  The grants are used for a variety of hands-on projects, workshops and teacher development programs throughout the school year.  FirstEnergy will award 31 grants, totaling more than $11,000, to educators across its service area in the 2011-12 academic year.

Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up FirstEnergy's Educational Advisory Council.  As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in FirstEnergy's service area.

Ohio Edison serves approximately 1 million customers.
