AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]), is upgrading nearly 60 emergency sirens in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania in areas surrounding the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station.  The sirens are part of an extensive emergency response system designed to protect public health and safety.

Thirty new sirens with battery backup power are being installed at existing siren locations within 10 miles of the Beaver Valley.  In addition, battery backup power is being added to another 28 existing sirens.  Initial testing of the sirens is being completed; additional testing will be conducted on a weekly basis to ensure the sirens are functioning properly.

"Protecting the health and safety of the public is our top priority at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station Power Plant, and emergency planning is a key part of that effort," said Beaver Valley Site Vice President Paul Harden.  "The siren system upgrade strengthens the ability to alert the public in the event of an emergency at the plant or during other natural or manmade incidents in the area."

With completion of this siren upgrade, all 120 of the emergency sirens in the 10-mile emergency planning zone around the Beaver Valley station will contain battery backup power units.  This ensures the sirens will be able to operate and provide notification if electrical service is interrupted.
