American consumers reined in their spending in April following a tariff-fueled buying binge the month before, according to new data released Friday that also showed inflation cooled off again.
In April 2025, U.S. consumer spending rose by 0.2% from the previous month, aligning with economists' expectations, while the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, a key inflation gauge for the Federal Reserve, increased by 0.3% month-over-month and 2.8% year-over-year, slightly above the anticipated 2.7%. The core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also rose by 0.3% monthly and 2.8% annually, indicating persistent inflationary pressures. Despite these figures, the Federal Reserve is expected to maintain current interest rates at its upcoming meeting, as it continues to monitor economic indicators closely to guide future monetary policy decisions.
