The World Health Organization (WHO) is offering early retirement packages to its staff as a cost-cutting measure in anticipation of the U.S. withdrawal from the organization, according to a report by Fortune on March 7, 2025. The U.S., which is the WHO's largest funder, announced its intention to exit the organization by the end of 2025, prompting the WHO to take steps to reduce its budget. The early retirement offer is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and reduce expenses, which may also include staff layoffs and program cuts. The WHO's Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that these measures are necessary to ensure the organization's financial sustainability in light of the impending loss of U.S. funding.
