SEMO Students Expand Free Tax Prep Services
Locales: Missouri, UNITED STATES

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - February 24th, 2026 - Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) students are continuing their annual tradition of offering free tax return preparation and filing assistance to the public, but this year's program signals a significant expansion in scope and anticipated impact. The Delta Region Information Center (DRIC) at SEMO is gearing up to support a larger number of individuals and families across the region, acknowledging a growing need for accessible tax assistance, particularly in light of recent economic shifts and the increasing complexity of the US tax code.
Initially launched several years ago, the program provides vital services to those who qualify, prioritizing low-to-moderate income individuals, people with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency. Dr. Michael Ortinau, director of the DRIC, emphasizes the program's dual benefit: "We're happy to be able to offer this service to the community, but it's also an incredibly valuable experiential learning opportunity for our students. They are applying classroom knowledge to real-world situations, developing crucial skills in financial literacy, client communication, and professional responsibility."
This year, however, the DRIC is reporting a marked increase in demand. Several factors contribute to this surge. The lingering effects of the 2024 economic slowdown, while showing signs of recovery, have left many families facing financial hardship and navigating complex tax situations related to unemployment benefits, stimulus payments, and altered income levels. Simultaneously, recent changes to federal tax credits, particularly those related to clean energy and childcare, require more detailed understanding and accurate filing, presenting challenges for individuals without professional guidance.
"We've seen a significant uptick in inquiries from individuals who are unsure about claiming these new credits," explains Sarah Chen, a senior accounting student and volunteer with the program. "The rules are often nuanced, and it's easy to make a mistake that could lead to delays or even penalties. We're here to help ensure everyone receives the refunds they're entitled to."
The program's funding, generously provided by a grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has allowed the DRIC to not only maintain but expand its services. This year's grant includes funds for additional training for student volunteers, ensuring they are up-to-date on the latest tax laws and regulations. The DRIC has also invested in enhanced software and security measures to protect the sensitive financial information of clients. Furthermore, they've partnered with local community organizations - including the Cape Girardeau Public Library and several area social service agencies - to broaden outreach and ensure the program reaches those most in need.
Appointments are required and can be scheduled online at [ semostaxhelp.youcanbook.me ] or by calling 573-651-5197. The DRIC is actively encouraging early appointments, as slots are filling up quickly. Walk-in services are not available.
The DRIC's work extends beyond simply filing returns. Students also provide basic financial literacy education, helping clients understand their tax obligations and plan for future financial stability. This holistic approach addresses a critical gap in access to financial resources within the Delta region.
Looking ahead, Dr. Ortinau hopes to establish the program as a permanent fixture in the community and explore opportunities for year-round financial counseling services. "We believe that financial literacy is essential for building strong communities, and we're committed to providing the resources people need to achieve financial well-being," he states. "The response from both the community and our students has been overwhelmingly positive, and we're excited to continue growing this important service."
The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, of which the SEMO/DRIC initiative is a part, plays a crucial role nationwide in assisting millions of taxpayers each year.
