Drivers should be aware of current road closures

Drivers in the Kansas City area should stay alert to ongoing road closures and detours as the state’s transportation authorities ramp up maintenance and repair work across major highways. According to a recent update from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), several key routes—Interstate 70, U.S. 73, Interstate 35, and U.S. 59—are experiencing temporary lane closures or speed restrictions as crews replace damaged pavement, fix bridge approaches, and install new traffic signals.
Key Route Updates
Interstate 70 (I‑70): Between mile markers 112 and 118, a full-width closure is in effect for the next 48 hours. The closure is being performed to replace a large concrete slab that has developed a fissure. Drivers are advised to use the detour via K‑12 and K‑63, which will add roughly 8 minutes to the trip. KDOT’s traffic engineering team is also tightening the speed limit to 45 mph on the affected segment.
U.S. 73: Near the junction with I‑435, a partial lane closure is in progress due to resurfacing work. The northbound lanes are closed while southbound lanes remain open but under a reduced speed limit of 35 mph. Traffic cameras along the corridor show steady flow, but commuters are encouraged to anticipate a slight delay.
Interstate 35 (I‑35): In the city of Leavenworth, a 2‑lane closure is active on the southbound side of the route near Exit 8. This work is part of a larger bridge rehabilitation project that began last week. A detour via Wabash Road will add about 10 minutes to the commute, especially during peak hours.
U.S. 59: A 4‑lane reconstruction project near the I‑435 interchange has forced a temporary 3‑lane closure on the northbound side. The project is expected to finish by the end of the month, after which a new median will be installed to improve safety.
Safety Tips for Drivers
KDOT officials emphasized the importance of checking the “Road Conditions” page on their website before traveling. They highlighted that traffic cameras provide real‑time updates, and the “Road Closure Alerts” service is available via SMS for subscribers. “We want drivers to have the most current information so they can plan their routes effectively and avoid unnecessary delays,” said KDOT spokesperson Dan Miller. “Please be patient and follow posted detour signs.”
Weather-Related Delays
In addition to construction, the region is dealing with a late‑winter storm that has caused slick road conditions on several rural routes. KDOT has issued a “wet pavement advisory” on K‑68 and K‑96, recommending that drivers reduce speed by 10 mph in those areas. The agency is also monitoring the impact of snow melt on bridges in the Flint Hills, and additional closures are being added daily as conditions change.
Upcoming Projects
Beyond the current closures, KDOT announced a new major project aimed at upgrading the I‑70 corridor from the I‑435 interchange to the Missouri state line. The project will include widening lanes, improving signage, and installing new lighting. Work is slated to begin in early spring, with a projected completion date of late summer. The agency has promised to keep the public informed through weekly newsletters and community meetings.
Community Outreach
KDOT’s public relations office is hosting a virtual town‑hall on October 22 to discuss the impact of these projects on local businesses and commuters. Stakeholders can register on the KDOT website to receive a link to the webinar. In the meantime, the agency’s “Ask a KDOT Engineer” portal is available for residents to submit questions about specific closures or proposed detours.
How to Stay Informed
- Website: Visit the KDOT “Road Conditions” page for live maps and status updates.
- Mobile Apps: Download the “KDOT Road Alert” app for push notifications on roadwork, accidents, and weather-related delays.
- Social Media: Follow @KDOT on Twitter and Facebook for short‑term updates.
- Local Radio: Tune into KTRS and KFRC for hourly traffic reports.
The collective effort to keep Kansas drivers safe and informed underscores the department’s commitment to efficient transportation. By staying aware of current road closures, using available resources, and allowing extra travel time when necessary, commuters can navigate the evolving landscape with confidence.
