Americans are still dreading a recession and rising inflation, even after President Donald Trump paused his massive tariff hike on dozens of countries.
The final reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index for April 2025 showed a slight increase to 77.2 from the preliminary reading of 77.0, indicating a modest improvement in consumer confidence. This uptick reflects a more positive outlook on personal finances and the broader economy, driven by steady job growth and easing inflation concerns. Despite this, consumers remain cautious about future economic conditions, with particular worries about potential interest rate hikes and geopolitical tensions. The survey also highlighted a slight improvement in perceptions of current economic conditions, rising to 83.5 from 83.0, while expectations for the next six months edged up to 73.1 from 72.9. Overall, the data suggests a cautiously optimistic consumer base, balancing current stability with future uncertainties.
