The egg shortage may have finally been cracked.
Egg prices in the United States have significantly decreased, with the average price for a dozen large Grade A eggs dropping to $2.52 in March, down from a peak of $4.82 in January 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This decline is attributed to the recovery of the egg-laying hen population following a severe avian flu outbreak that had previously reduced supply. The USDA reports that the number of egg-laying hens has increased to 314 million, up from 308 million a year ago, helping to stabilize and lower prices. Despite the drop, egg prices remain higher than pre-outbreak levels, reflecting ongoing challenges in the poultry industry.
