  • American-funded aid efforts to tackle diseases such as malaria, as well as preventing newborn baby deaths and treating severe malnutrition, should resume, according to a memo from the United States government reviewed by Reuters.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has issued a memo urging countries to restart essential health services for tuberculosis (TB), malaria, and newborn care, which were disrupted due to the focus on the COVID-19 response. The memo, dated February 8, 2025, highlights the severe impact of these disruptions, noting that TB and malaria deaths have increased, and there has been a significant rise in maternal and newborn mortality rates. USAID emphasizes the need for immediate action to restore these services to prevent further loss of life and to mitigate the long-term health consequences. The agency calls for the integration of these services into broader health systems strengthening efforts, ensuring that resources and attention are not solely focused on pandemics but also on ongoing health crises.
