British competition watchdog taps former Amazon exec Doug Gurr as interim chair

Former Amazon UK Country Manager Doug Gurr Tuesday became interim chair of Britain's Competition and Markets Authority as government directs regulators to focus on growth instead of market competition compliance.
The British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has appointed Doug Gurr, a former Amazon executive, as its interim chair. Gurr, who previously served as Amazon's UK country manager and was involved in significant negotiations with the UK government, will take over from Marcus Bokkerink, who is stepping down to focus on his role at the London Stock Exchange Group. Gurr's appointment comes at a time when the CMA is actively involved in high-profile investigations, including probes into Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard and Adobe's purchase of Figma. His experience in the tech industry and his understanding of competition issues are expected to be beneficial as the CMA navigates these complex cases. Gurr will hold the position until a permanent chair is appointed.
