FirstEnergy Awards Grants to Educators in the Ohio Edison Service Territory -- AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]) announced today that seven teachers representing six schools in the Ohio Edison service territory have been awarded Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education grants.  The grants, of up to $500 each, will be used for a variety of creative classroom projects, workshops and teacher development programs.

Winning projects for the 2012-2013 school year include alternative energy solutions, hydroponics and water filtration.

Teachers earning grants include:  Karen Grandall, Portage Path CLC Elementary STEM School; Peter Geiss, Springfield High School; and Laurie Thompson, Ritzman CLC Elementary School, all of Akron; Cathy Corr, Crestwood Middle School in Mantua;  Fran Compton, McGuffey K-8 School in Warren; and Sharon R. Ragan and Carrie Sinkele, Chaney STEM Academy in Youngstown.

The grants are awarded to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by FirstEnergy's electric utility operating companies and where it has facilities.  Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up the company's Educational Advisory Council.  As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in FirstEnergy's service area. 

Since the program's inception, more than 1,000 STEM grants have been awarded by FirstEnergy to educators and youth group leaders.
