Display Will Honor 200th Anniversary of the Founding of Greene Township
AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]) is sponsoring the opening night fireworks at the annual Hookstown Fair, which begins August 21, 2012, in Beaver County, Pa. This year's fireworks will honor the 200th anniversary of the founding of Greene Township, which is where the fairgrounds are located.
FirstEnergy has been a long-time supporter of the Hookstown Fair since it has two major generating facilities nearby – the Bruce Mansfield Plant and the Beaver Valley Power Station are located in Shippingport, Pa.– and many employees live in the area.
The opening night festivities also will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. for the historic Glenn Barn, a 100-year-old structure that is being dedicated at the South Side Historic Village, a group of local, historic buildings that have been relocated to the fairgrounds site to help promote the heritage and history of western Pennsylvania. In 2011, FirstEnergy donated the Glenn Barn, which was located on land it had acquired in Greene Township, and paid to have the barn disassembled and reassembled at its current location. FirstEnergy is continuing its support of the Hookstown Fair by relocating three horse stables to the fairground site from local properties that it owns.
FirstEnergy representatives also will participate in the 4-H livestock auction. Last year, FirstEnergy representatives submitted the winning bid for the grand champion steer. In addition, the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's Mobile Ag Education Science Lab is appearing at the fair as a result of a contribution from the FirstEnergy Foundation.
FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company dedicated to safety, reliability and operational excellence. Its 10 electric distribution companies comprise one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric systems. Its diverse generating fleet features non-emitting nuclear, scrubbed baseload coal, natural gas, and pumped-storage hydro and other renewables, and has a total generating capacity of nearly 23,000 megawatts.
