NEWARK, N.J.--([ ])--Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU) announced today that it will be the exclusive sponsor of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston Collegeas National Retirement Risk Index.

"We look forward to building on our partnership with Prudential and continuing to use the Index as the basis for research reports that get to the heart of Americansa retirement challenges, as well as the solutions that will help improve their prospects for retirement security."

The highly respected Index measures the percentage of working-age Americans at risk of failing to maintain their standard of living in retirement. As the sponsor of the Index, Prudential will underwrite a number of studies conducted by the Center for Retirement Research related to the Index.

aThe National Retirement Risk Index is widely recognized as a key indicator of Americansa retirement readiness,a said Mary-Jane Flaherty, vice president and head of Strategic Initiatives at Prudential. aWe are delighted to be supporting the Center for Retirement Researchas important work with the Index, as well as the related research studies that serve to highlight fundamental trends related to retirement readiness.a

The National Retirement Risk Index reflects the changing retirement landscape. According to the Index, the percentage of households at risk of not being able to maintain their standard of living in retirement has risen from 30 percent in 1989 to 51 percent in 2009. The next update of the Index is scheduled for the spring of 2012.

aThe Index underscores a growing problem in America today. Retirement needs are increasing due to longer life spans and rising health care costs, while retirement resources are shrinking due to declining Social Security replacement rates and insufficient savings in 401(k)s,a said Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research. aWe look forward to building on our partnership with Prudential and continuing to use the Index as the basis for research reports that get to the heart of Americansa retirement challenges, as well as the solutions that will help improve their prospects for retirement security.a
