Russia shipped a diesel cargo to Syria onboard a tanker under U.S. sanctions, the first known such direct supply to the Middle Eastern country in more than a decade, LSEG data showed.
According to Reuters, Russia has begun shipping diesel to Syria using a tanker that is under U.S. sanctions, as reported on March 6, 2025. The tanker, named "Sig," which was previously sanctioned by the U.S. for transporting Russian oil above the G7 price cap, was observed loading diesel at the Russian port of Tuapse. This move comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic sanctions aimed at restricting Russia's oil trade due to its actions in Ukraine. The shipment to Syria, a country also under heavy international sanctions, underscores Russia's strategy to find alternative markets for its petroleum products despite Western restrictions. This development highlights the complexities of enforcing sanctions and the lengths to which countries will go to circumvent them.
