The agency responsible for enforcing federal election law has also lost its ability to proactively make policies.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has decided not to pursue an investigation into a complaint filed by the Campaign Legal Center against Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.) regarding potential campaign finance violations. The complaint alleged that Santos may have used a straw donor scheme to funnel money into his campaign and misrepresented his campaign's financial status. Despite the FEC's decision, the matter is not closed as the Department of Justice and the House Ethics Committee are still investigating Santos' campaign finances. The FEC's dismissal of the complaint was based on a lack of sufficient evidence to proceed, but this does not preclude further action by other investigative bodies.
