Women Leaders in Construction Chapter Hosts Successful Networking Event
Locale: UNITED STATES

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - March 26, 2026 - The Women Leaders in Construction (WLC) Indiana Chapter held a highly successful networking event this week in Indianapolis, signaling a continued push for greater female representation and leadership within the traditionally male-dominated construction industry. The event, attended by professionals ranging from seasoned project managers to emerging tradeswomen, underscored the critical need for supportive networks and mentorship opportunities for women navigating this complex field.
While women comprise nearly 43% of the overall U.S. workforce, they represent just 9.3% of the construction workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This disparity is even more pronounced in leadership positions. The WLC is actively working to close this gap, fostering a community where women can thrive and advance their careers.
"We need women in leadership roles and in all positions in construction," stated Ashley O'Connell, President of the WLC Indiana Chapter. "It's not simply about achieving parity; it's about bringing diverse perspectives and skillsets to the table. Construction benefits from innovation, problem-solving, and a broader range of approaches - all of which are strengthened by a diverse workforce."
The Indianapolis event wasn't just a social gathering. Participants engaged in focused discussions covering key challenges faced by women in construction, including overcoming bias, accessing professional development opportunities, and balancing work-life demands. A recurring theme was the importance of mentorship. Many attendees expressed a desire for both mentors to guide them and the opportunity to be mentors to those earlier in their careers. This reciprocal mentorship model is seen as vital for sustained growth and knowledge transfer.
"It's great to see women supporting women and it's important to have a supportive environment when women are trying to progress in their careers," O'Connell explained. "Often, women in male-dominated fields face unique hurdles. Having a network of peers who understand these challenges - and have successfully overcome them - can be incredibly empowering."
The WLC Indiana Chapter's proactive approach aligns with a national trend. Across the country, organizations are implementing initiatives to attract and retain women in construction. These include pre-apprenticeship programs specifically designed for women, scholarships to cover trade school tuition, and partnerships with construction companies committed to diversity and inclusion. Companies like Skanska, Turner Construction, and Bechtel are increasingly prioritizing gender diversity as a core business strategy, recognizing the link between a diverse workforce and improved project outcomes. However, challenges remain. Access to childcare, lack of flexible work arrangements, and persistent stereotypes continue to act as barriers to entry and advancement for women. The WLC is actively advocating for policies that address these issues, including advocating for more affordable childcare options near construction sites and promoting family-friendly workplace policies.
The impact of increased female representation in construction extends beyond simply filling positions. Studies indicate that diverse teams are more innovative, productive, and safer. A report by McKinsey & Company found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 25% more likely to have above-average profitability. Access the McKinsey report here.
The WLC Indiana Chapter plans to build on the momentum of this event by hosting regular workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities throughout the year. Future initiatives include a mentorship program pairing experienced construction professionals with emerging talent, and a series of skill-building workshops focused on areas such as project management, estimating, and leadership development. They also aim to increase their outreach efforts to local high schools and vocational schools, inspiring the next generation of women to consider careers in the trades. O'Connell emphasized that the organization's goal is not merely to increase the number of women in construction, but to cultivate a culture of inclusion where all voices are heard and valued. The long-term vision is a construction industry where women not only participate, but lead, innovate, and shape the built environment for generations to come.
