Consumers Energy Hosts Cub Scout Day and Helps 150 Cub Scouts Become... -- JACKSON, Mich., March 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

JACKSON, Mich., March 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Energy employees in four locations across the state today helped over 100 Cub Scouts earn the brand new Energy Expert patch, designed exclusively by Consumers Energy for Michigan Scouts.

To earn the patch, Scouts are required to complete a number of activities that focus on electric and natural gas safety, energy use, sources of energy, and careers in the energy industry. Utility employees led these activities at four events hosted at Consumers Energy service centers in Battle Creek, Bay City, Jackson, and Macomb.

"We thoroughly enjoy the experience getting to learn from Consumers Energy employees," said Lorraine Diaz , Royal Oak troop leader.  "It's very important for Scouts to learn about natural gas and electric safety, various forms of energy, and how it affects our community. There is no other scouting event like it."

Consumers Energy has helped Girl Scouts throughout Michigan earn the Energy Expert patch since 2006, but these events marked the first time Cub Scouts have been able to earn their very own patch.

"We love having the opportunity to educate Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts about energy," Megan Cary , education programs administrator, said. "These events give Scouts the chance to learn about the energy industry from experts in the field. The activities also help Scouts learn how to stay safe around electricity and natural gas, and teach them about energy conservation so they can help their families and make a difference in their communities."

Scouts always have the opportunity to earn the patch by visiting [ www.ConsumersEnergy.com/scouts ] and downloading the appropriate program for their level. Activities can usually be completed within two hours, making it a great program for pack meetings.
