Williams joined the Board of Directors of Ohio Edison in 1992.  He was then named a board member of FirstEnergy Corp. when it was formed in 1997 following the merger of Ohio Edison and Centerior Energy Corp.  During his tenure as a board member, FirstEnergy successfully completed mergers with GPU, Inc., in 2001, and Allegheny Energy Inc., in 2011.

With Williams' retirement, FirstEnergy's Board has 14 members.  He will continue to serve as a director for Jersey Central Power & Light, a FirstEnergy Corp. electric utility subsidiary serving 1.1 million customers in northern and central New Jersey.

"As FirstEnergy has grown as a company, Jesse has been a steadying influence on the board, particularly involving labor, diversity and corporate governance issues, and his experience will be greatly missed," said George M. Smart, chairman of FirstEnergy's Board of Directors.

Williams retired in 1998 as Vice President of Human Resources Policy, Employment Practices and Systems of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

He is chairman of the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (UMES) Board of Visitors, an advisory body providing assistance in the areas of business relations, institutional development, governmental issues and alumni affairs.  In addition, he serves as chairman of the Deacon's Ministry for the Cornerstone Fellowship Baptist Church.  He also is a life member of the NAACP, Phi Beta Sigma and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.

Williams earned a bachelor of arts degree from UMES and has completed post graduate work at Northwestern University, Morehouse College and Yale University.  In addition, he was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from UMES.

FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company dedicated to safety, reliability and operational excellence.  Its 10 electric distribution companies comprise the nation's largest investor-owned electric system.  Its diverse generating fleet features non-emitting nuclear, scrubbed base load coal, natural gas, and pumped-storage hydro and other renewables, and has a total generating capacity of nearly 23,000 megawatts.
