AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents in Canton, East Canton, Plain Township, Paris Township and Findlay now have more time to sign up to receive guaranteed savings on their monthly electric bills through their communities' electric discount program. By enrolling now with FirstEnergy Solutions, residents will save 9 percent off AEP Ohio's electric generation rate. FirstEnergy Solutions is the electric generation supplier that the communities selected as part of the opt-out electric aggregation programs that voters passed on November 8, 2011.

When the opt-out program is implemented in early 2012, all eligible residents in the community − including the residents that join now − will automatically be enrolled in the savings program and the discount will increase to 10 percent off AEP Ohio's generation rate.

"We worked closely with these communities to implement an enrollment program prior to the implementation of the opt-out program because of the uncertainty as to whether these communities would be allowed to enroll their residents after December 31 under AEP Ohio's proposed Electric Security Plan," said Julie Hextell, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for FirstEnergy Solutions. "Fortunately, we were able to bring attention to this issue, and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio modified AEP Ohio's rate plan to allow the residents of these communities to benefit from their aggregation programs.

"And since this is an offer that provides a percent off the utility's generation rate, customers receive guaranteed savings," Hextell adds. "Regardless if the utility's rate goes up or down, residents who sign up for this offer will continue to save money every month of the agreement."

Residents who choose FirstEnergy Solutions as their electric generation supplier will continue to receive one bill and the same level of service from AEP Ohio, and the utility will continue to deliver the electricity, maintain the poles and wires, and respond to power outages.
