BOSTON--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--On Monday, December 20 the Boston Bruins Foundation and InVivo Therapeutics (OTCBB: NVIV) will present a check for $15,000 dollars to Thomas E. Smith, founder of the Thomas E. Smith Fight to Cure Paralysis Foundation. The presentation will take place on-ice during the second intermission of the Bruins/Ducks game at the TD Garden (100 Legends Way, Boston, MA 02114).

"Until promising spinal cord injury treatments like InVivoa™s receive FDA approval, InVivo Therapeutics wants to contribute to the well-being of people with spinal cord injuries and we are proud to partner with the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation to make a difference now."

Thomas E. Smith currently suffers from a spinal cord injury. He was first paralyzed in August 2008 during a Junior A hockey summer tournament. With the help of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Smith recovered from his injury and went on to play hockey for the Boston Bulldogs, a member of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League. During hockey practice in October 2009, Smith suffered a second injury, unrelated to the first that left him paralyzed from the waist down. While working on his recovery, Smith founded the Thomas E. Smith Fight to Cure Paralysis Foundation, a group whose members are committed to filling the void in medical services for spinal injuries in New England by providing state of the art equipment and resources necessary to enhance the mobility for and access to the daily world of all persons.

Sir Richard J. Roberts, Ph.D., the 1993 Nobel Laureate in Medicine and Physiology and a Member of InVivoa™s Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board, said: aUntil promising spinal cord injury treatments like InVivoa™s receive FDA approval, InVivo Therapeutics wants to contribute to the well-being of people with spinal cord injuries and we are proud to partner with the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation to make a difference now.a

aThomas exemplifies a level of courage and selflessness that everyone can admire and that we should all aspire to,a said Bob Sweeney, Director of Development for the Boston Bruins Foundation. aThe injury he sustained, playing a sport he loves and excelled at, has not slowed him down one bit. Thomas is a role model to the greater New England community, both in how he fights to overcome his injury and in how he helps others do the same. The Boston Bruins Foundation and InVivo Therapeutics are both very grateful to Thomas.a

The Bruins face off against the Anaheim Ducks Monday, December 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET at the TD Garden.
