The first months of this school year were tough for Rosie, Maria and Jose, three Shenandoah seventh-graders who arrived from Mexico and speak Spanish only. The school district refers to students like them as "newcomers"

The Shenandoah School District in Iowa is testing a new technology aimed at assisting non-English speaking students through the use of translator earbuds. These earbuds, developed by Timekettle, translate spoken English into the student's native language in real-time, allowing for immediate comprehension in classroom settings. The initiative, which began with a pilot involving 10 students, seeks to bridge the language barrier, enabling these students to participate more fully in educational activities. The technology not only translates from English to other languages but also supports translation in the opposite direction, facilitating communication between students and teachers. This trial is part of a broader effort to integrate technology in education to enhance learning for students with diverse linguistic backgrounds.
