The Paris Agreement is a landmark international treaty aimed at addressing climate change, adopted by 196 parties at the UN Climate Change conference (COP21) in Paris in December 2015. It seeks to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees. Key elements include commitments from countries to prepare and submit their own plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with an aim to achieve a balance between emissions and removals by sinks in the second half of this century.
