U.S., China extend key science & tech cooperation deal amid trade, Trump tensions

The U.S. and China have agreed to extend their Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement (STA) for another six months, despite ongoing trade tensions and geopolitical frictions. This decision was made just before the agreement was set to expire, highlighting the importance both nations place on scientific collaboration. The STA, initially signed in 1979, facilitates cooperation in areas like agriculture, energy, space, health, environment, and earth sciences. The extension comes at a time when relations between the two countries are strained, with issues like trade disputes, technology theft allegations, and geopolitical rivalry in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreement's renewal reflects a mutual interest in maintaining scientific and technological exchanges, even as other aspects of their relationship face challenges.
