NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - August 20, 2009) - Con Edison customers broke a 2009 peak-electricity demand record today for the third time in 10 days when the company delivered 12,083 megawatts (MW) at 5 p.m.
It's the first day peak demand topped 12,000 megawatts (MW) this year and the 30th time in company history since the milestone was first crossed in 2001.
Today's electricity draw handily surpassed Monday's 11,937 MW and the next highest mark of 11,821 MW, set 10 days ago.
Today's preeminent peak demand indicates customers are feeling the heat, but in a year with milder-than-normal average weather, even today's usage falls short of Con Edison's all-time, peak-demand top ten. (The all-time peak record in the company's New York City and Westchester County service area is 13,141 MW, set on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at 5 p.m.)
